Community Outreach
Continuing Norwalk Hospital's commitment to medical excellence, Norwalk Hospital EMS chose to go above and beyond providing only 911 service to the city of Norwalk. They provide on and off site presentations about safety and 911 access to schools within the city of Norwalk. This service is provided to help our cities youth understand why to call 911 and what to expect when an ambulance comes to their aid. Similar presentations are provided at the Norwalk Senior Center and are geared towards the changing needs of senior citizens. They feel that public education plays an important role in providing quality healthcare and we stive to keep that in the forefront.
Special Operations
-The spring and summer months bring outdoor activities, with those activities comes a new facet of emergency response. They have a team of individuals suited for such activities, the Norwalk Hospital EMS Bike Team. The bike team consists of EMT's and Paramedic's on bicycles equipped to provide Advanced Life Support. The Bike Team is most often utilized at larger public gatherings such as the annual Oyster Festival. The Bike Team can respond, stabilize and extricate a patient to an awaiting ambulance.
-Norwalk sits on Long Island Sound and has more than 20 miles of coastline with many inlets, docks, beaches and islands. This feature is what attracted many residents to Norwalk and annually brings summer guests to our city. At Norwalk Hospital EMS, this feature of Norwalk brings a challenge to Emergency Medical Care; how to respond to emergencies on the water. To accomplish this, they work very closely with the Norwalk Marine Police to provide an expedient response to any person sick or injured on the water.
-In the wake of September 11th, Norwalk Hospital has fully recognized the growing concern of terrorism in the United States. With that recognition comes the need for disaster preparedness in the hospital and in the field. The newest addition to our fleet is a trailer designed to respond to large scale disasters of any nature, which potentially could yield dozens of patients. This trailer is equipped with large amounts of medical supplies, oxygen, portable lights and various other equipment designed for such an event. This trailer by design can be utilized not only for the city of Norwalk, but all of our surrounding communities should the need arise and is always ready to be put into service with only minutes notice. This unit is on standby at most large public gatherings in the area and is usually accompanied by their bike team.
