What to Expect When Calling 911

When you call 911 in Norwalk a 911 dispatcher at the Norwalk Police Department will answer your call for help. The dispatcher will first ask you the location of the emergency and the phone number you are calling from.  The dispatcher will then ask a variety of questions in order to determine the nature of the emergency and what resources to send to your aid. The dispatcher may give you Pre-Arrival instructions, so you can begin helping the sick or injured before the ambulance arrives.

Depending on the nature of the emergency a police officer and/or a fire truck will be sent along with the paramedic ambulance.   The Norwalk Police and Norwalk Fire Dept are first responders in Norwalk and are equipped with oxygen and AED's to begin life saving procedures if they arrive before the paramedic ambulance.

Once the paramedics arrive they will be updated by the first responders as to the condition of the patient. The Paramedic's will then take over care and prepare you for transport to the hospital. It is very important that any medications the patient may be on be easily accessible to the paramedics. It is recommended that you keep a list of pertinent medical information and medications somewhere visible, like on the refrigerator.  A commonly used program is called  File Of Life, which is endorsed by Norwalk Hospital EMS.  The paramedics will then transport the patient to the hospital and continue treatment on the way.
